I was studying in Karachi during the time target killings were at peak
in Quetta. I was scared but I also wanted to do something for my people. I
started thinking and thought that the best choice of time would be to provide
education to avoid long lasting effects of sectarianism and hatred on youth. I
came back from Karachi and sat with the local senior community members to ask
them to help me get some land. I told them that I only need a space and will
take care of everything else myself. But, all of them discouraged me because
they thought it is the work of the government not individuals. They refused by
putting the responsibility of education on the government and laughed on my
self-help idea but I was determined and knew that I cannot wait for the
government.
With low morale, I went to the local counsellor and asked him to
give me the space he was intending to build a hotel on. I had to request, plead
and even beg him. Thankfully, he agreed and I was able to build a school for my
people. The need of education was so desperate that the strength of my students
started from 80 in the very first year and this year I have 1300 students in my
school. It could have been possible the easier way but low sense of
responsibility and determination among people made me go the hard way.
Sometimes, I still doubt if it would have been possible if I hadn't gotten the
land. However, I learned through my life experiences that there should not be
any discrimination based on caste, religion or region, and that everyone should
have the guts and courage to help themselves instead of waiting for the
governments or any other external support.
